Entertaining during the holidays is all about creating a space that feels welcoming and full of joy, and nothing does that quite like the scent of a Christmas Potpourri Pot bubbling away on the stove. It’s an effortless way to make your home smell festive and inviting, setting the stage for cherished moments with family and friends.

Perfect for hosting a get-together, this simmer pot recipe is a stress-free touch that adds warmth to your home without taking time away from your guests. I love to set it small pot on the stove or in a small crock pot while I wrap presents or watch Christmas movies, filling my home with holiday cheer.

Nikki’s Recipe Rundown

  • Scent Profile: This Christmas Simmer Pot brings the essence of the holidays to life with a warm, citrusy, and spiced fragrance with hints of evergreen. It’s the kind of scent that makes your home feel inviting and festive, like a warm holiday hug.
  • Texture: While you won’t be tasting it, the simmering ingredients look beautiful and festive as they bob around in the pot. It’s a visual treat that’s as delightful to watch as it is to smell.
  • Ease: Ease: Ridiculously easy! Just slice, toss, and simmer. Perfect for anyone wanting a festive home without spending too much time in the kitchen. You’ll be in and out in five minutes flat.
  • Pros: Fills your home with a natural, warm fragrance without any artificial sprays, or candles. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to use up fruit and herbs that are just past their prime.
  • Considerations: Keep an eye on the water level and top it up as needed so the pot doesn’t run dry. If you’re giving it as a gift, make sure recipients know to add fresh orange or apple before simmering.
  • Recipe Repeatability: High. This is one of those recipes you’ll find yourself making over and over during the holidays, maybe even tweaking the ingredients to match your mood or what you have on hand.

Ingredients Needed for A Holiday Simmer Pot

Labeled image of ingredients needed to make a Christmas pot.
  • Fresh Cranberries: These bright, jewel-toned berries not only add a splash of color but release a subtly tart and festive fragrance.
  • Orange: Sliced to release citrusy oils and essence, adding a cheerful, zesty aroma that pairs perfectly with holiday spices.
  • Apple: Adds a sweet and crisp scent, grounding the overall fragrance with a touch of warmth.
  • Rosemary Sprigs: A piney herb that mimics the scent of a Christmas tree; feel free to swap these out for fresh pine if you prefer a more classic evergreen scent.
  • Cinnamon Sticks: This spice is synonymous with cozy, wintry days and adds a rich, warm scent that ties everything together.
  • Whole Cloves: Small but mighty, these cloves lend a spicy, slightly sweet note that enhances the depth of the simmer pot.
  • Water: The base that brings it all together, allowing the ingredients to gently release their fragrance as they simmer.

Variations and Substitutions for Seasonal Simmer Pots

  • Substitute Tangerines for Oranges: If you have tangerines on hand, use them instead for a slightly different citrus note. While oranges smell like the Holidays to me, you can even add in lemons!
  • Add Pine Sprigs: For a deeper evergreen scent, swap out rosemary for fresh pine branches.
  • Spices Galore: Feel free to add a few star anise or a sprinkle of nutmeg for an extra layer of spiciness.
  • Dried Ingredients: If fresh fruits aren’t available, dried orange or apple slices can be used with a similar aromatic effect.

How To Make a Christmas Simmer Pot

  1. Start by slicing your orange and apple into even, fragrant pieces.
  2. Place them in a small pot along with the cranberries, rosemary sprigs, cinnamon sticks, and whole cloves.
  3. Pour in enough water to just cover the ingredients and bring everything to a gentle simmer on your stove.
  4. Let the pot simmer and keep an eye on the water level—top it off with more as needed to ensure the pot doesn’t dry out.

Top Tips for Holiday Simmer Pot

  • Temperature Control: Start on medium heat to bring the water to a simmer, then lower to a very gentle heat to maintain the scent without overcooking the fruit or herbs.
  • Reuse and Refresh: After your initial simmer session, don’t toss the ingredients right away! You can reuse them the next day or two by adding fresh water and perhaps a few new fruit slices or an extra cinnamon stick to rejuvenate the scent (if needed).
  • Slow Cooker Option: If you want to free up your stovetop or keep your home fragrance pot going for a longer period, use a slow cooker set on low. This method is perfect for creating that holiday scent all day without needing much attention.
  • Add Essential Oils: For an extra burst of fragrance, add a couple of drops of food-safe essential oils like orange or cinnamon. Just a drop or two can enhance the natural aroma.

Guide to Gift Giving a Simmer Pot

Choose Your Jar and Decor:
Pick a clear mason jar or a decorative glass container that highlights the vibrant ingredients inside. To make it extra special, look for holiday-themed jars or seasonal shapes like ornaments, snowflakes, or even Santa or snowman designs. These fun and festive jars can be reused, adding an extra layer of cheer and practicality to your gift.

Bags:
Choose a festive gift bag or a small basket that adds charm to your gift. A burlap or fabric bag can lend a rustic, cozy feel, while a bright, holiday-themed bag brings a touch of cheer. Clear bags or boxes that show off the ingredients are perfect, too! These options not only look great but also make transporting your gift easy.

Free Gift Tags

Make sure to attach a gift tag that includes clear, simple instructions for using the simmering pot. If you have a custom tag or a printable card ready, use that to share the steps, like “Slice the fruit, add to a pot with the jar’s contents, cover with water, and simmer on low.” This lets your friend know exactly how to enjoy their gift.

Add a Personal Touch:
Tie a piece of twine or a festive ribbon around the jar, and don’t forget a handwritten note with a warm holiday message (especially if you don’t use a gift tag). Small decorative touches like a mini pinecone, sprig of rosemary, or tiny ornament make the gift feel even more special and personalized.

Keep It Fresh:
Since your simmer pot gift includes fresh ingredients like fruit or herbs, be sure to keep the assembled jar in the refrigerator until you’re ready to give it. I recommend adding the apple and orange whole. This helps maintain the ingredients’ freshness and vibrancy. Also, let them know they should refrigerate it if they don’t plan to use it right away.

Bundle It Up:
Consider pairing your simmer pot jar with some cozy extras. A holiday tea towel, a small candle, or a bag of homemade cookies makes it feel like a complete, thoughtful gift bundle. You could also set it in a glass pot or cast iron pot, which is perfect for simmering. It’s a simple way to add a touch of comfort and joy.

How to Store this Festive Simmer Blend

To get the most out of your Christmas Simmer Pot and enjoy it over multiple days, follow these storage tips:

  1. Cool Down First: Let the simmer pot cool completely before handling.
  2. Transfer to a Container: Carefully pour the cooled cranberries, orange and apple slices, rosemary sprigs, cinnamon sticks, and cloves, along with any remaining liquid, into an airtight container or a mason jar.
  3. Refrigerate: Store the container in the refrigerator. This will keep the ingredients fresh for up to 2-3 days.
  4. Reuse for Another Simmer: When you’re ready to enjoy it again, pour the contents back into your stock pot, add fresh water, and bring to a gentle simmer. For an extra boost of fragrance, consider adding a fresh orange slice or another cinnamon stick.

Extra Tips for Gift Giving:

Refrigeration Reminder: If your simmer pot has fresh fruit and herbs, be sure to refrigerate it between uses to maintain freshness and prevent spoilage.

Dry Ingredient Storage: If you’re preparing the jar for a gift without fresh fruit (using only dried ingredients like cinnamon sticks and whole cloves), store it at room temperature in a sealed jar until it’s ready to use.
