These Biscoff Cookie Butter Muddy Buddies are my favorite twist on the classic, and they’re so much more than just a snack—they’re a little piece of joy you can share. I’ve always love giving personalized gifts, whether it’s during the holidays, as a thank-you for a teacher, or just because someone could use a little sweetness in their day. There’s something so heartwarming about putting together a thoughtful, homemade treat that feels like a hug in snack form. This recipe is perfect for that! It’s quick to make, easy to package, and feels just a bit more special because it’s made with love.

When it comes to gifting, these treats truly shine! Picture them in festive tins or tied up in clear cellophane bags with a sprinkle of seasonal charm—maybe some red and green sprinkles or a few holiday candies. To make it even more personal, include a handwritten tag with something sweet like “Made with Love” or “Cookie Butter Bliss Inside.” If handwriting tags feels overwhelming, no worries—I’ve got you covered! I created downloadable Christmas gift tags you can print at home to add that polished touch. Gifting doesn’t have to be complicated, and these muddy buddies make it easy to spread love and cheer to everyone on your list.

Nikki’s Recipe Rundown

  • Taste: Sweet, creamy, and warmly spiced—cookie butter and white chocolate make the perfect duo.
  • Texture: A satisfying crunch from the Chex cereal, a creamy coating, and a bit of extra texture from the crushed cookie pieces.
  • Ease: Super simple with no baking required—just melt, mix, shake, and enjoy!
  • Pros: This recipe makes a big batch, is totally peanut-free, uses easy-to-find ingredients, and can be made ahead for parties or gifting.
  • Considerations: The cookie butter coating is thicker than the usual peanut butter version, so stir gently to avoid breaking the cereal.
  • Recipe Repeatability: An easy go-to treat you’ll love making over and over again! Customize it for seasons, holidays, or simply your favorite flavors with mix-ins and themed sprinkles.

Ingredients Needed for Puppy Chow without Peanut Butter

  • White Chocolate Chips: Choose good-quality white chocolate chips—they melt better and give a smoother coating.
  • Cookie Butter: The star of the show! Any brand works, but I love using Biscoff for its rich, spiced flavor.
  • Salted Butter: A little salt balances the sweetness perfectly, but unsalted butter works too, if that’s what you have. Just add a pinch of salt to the mix.
  • Vanilla Extract: A splash of vanilla enhances all the other flavors and rounds out the sweetness.
  • Chex Cereal: Both work great! Rice Chex is a little lighter, while Corn Chex has a hint of nuttiness—so go with your favorite..
  • Powdered Sugar: Powdered sugar is what makes these muddy buddies totally snack-able. It will help the dry up any moisture and keep the cookie butter and chocolate goodness locked in!
  • Cinnamon: For a bit of warm spice.
  • Biscoff Cookies: Broken Lotus Biscoff cookies add extra crunch and that signature cookie butter flavor.

Step 1 | Make Sugar Mixture

Place a piece of parchment paper on 2 rimmed baking sheets and set aside.

Evenly divide the powdered sugar, cinnamon, and Biscoff cookies into 2 gallon-sized zipper-top bags. (1 ¼ cups powdered sugar, ¼ teaspoon cinnamon, and ¾ cup cookie pieces into each bag) Shake each bag to mix and set aside.

In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate chips, cookie butter, and butter. Microwave in 15-second intervals, stirring in between. Cook until the mixture is fully melted and smooth, but don’t overcook.

Add the vanilla extract and stir again. The mixture won’t be as thin or as smooth as the typical muddy buddy peanut butter and chocolate mixture because cookie butter and white chocolate melt differently.

Step 3 | Combine with Cereal

Place the cereal in a very large mixing bowl and pour the chocolate mixture over the cereal. Use a rubber spatula to gently lift the cereal from the bottom to stir together, being careful not to crush or break the cereal. Stir till it is coated mostly evenly.

Step 4 | Shake

Add half the coated cereal into each prepared bag and seal. Shake each bag gently to coat the pieces in powdered sugar, tipping them upside down, too.

Step 5 | Cool & Enjoy

Dump the muddy buddies onto the prepared trays. Gently spread them out evenly, breaking up any big clumps, and allow them to cool completely for about 10-15 minutes before transferring them to an airtight container or fresh zipper-top bags.

Recipe Tips for the Best Muddy Buddies Recipe

  • Don’t overheat the chocolate mixture! Especially when heating it up in the microwave, it is easy to overdo it. Gentle, short bursts in the microwave are key!
  • Be gentle when mixing – those Chex pieces are delicate!
  • Let them cool completely before storing them to maintain the perfect texture. If you place them in the fridge too quickly, they will get soft instead of crispy!
  • Work in batches when coating with powdered sugar for the most even coverage! This is why I used two separate ziplock bags. Don’t use just one!

Variations and Substitutions

  • Chocolate: Dark or milk chocolate can work instead of white chocolate, but the flavors will be a bit more rich.
  • Add extras: Toss in some mini white chocolate chips or crushed graham crackers for some extra flavors and textures.
  • Make it seasonal: Add pumpkin pie spice in fall or crushed candy canes during holidays!
  • Can’t find Biscoff cookie butter? Other cookie butters can work, though the flavor will be a little different!

What’s the difference between Muddy Buddies and Puppy Chow?

They are actually the same thing! “Muddy Buddies” is the technical brand name, but it is often referred to as puppy chow as well. These phrases can be used interchangeably to describe the same delicious snack!

Does this have to be kept in the fridge or freezer?

I personally like the taste of it better cold, but it is up to you! Storing it in the fridge also helps the clusters melt into each other less. If you don’t have a particularly warm kitchen, feel free to keep them at room temperature.

Storage: You can store this cookie butter puppy chow in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks!

Freeze: When stored in the freezer, they are good for up to 3 months.
