What exactly is Sangria?

Sangria is a punch-like beverage that combines, wine, fruit, sugar (or fruit juice in this case), and other ingredients.

There are a few important ingredients that need to be added to every pitcher of sangria.

Ingredient Notes

  • Red Wine: Blood Red is the look you are going for. Any red wine you love.
  • Apple Cider: I love to use sparkling apple cider for extra flavor and some bubbles.
  • Cranberry Juice: This gives even more color and a bit of tartness.
  • Brandy: (optional) Adding in ½ cup of brandy gives sangria a little something special and is traditional in a sangria. Blackberry brandy would also be delish!
  • Red, Orange, and Black Fruit: In keeping with the Spooktacular theme here I used apples, oranges, and blackberries. All fit right in with Halloween colors.

How To Make Easy Halloween Sangria

Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact ingredients and full recipe instructions!

Step 1 | Cut and Add Fruit to Pitcher

Make sure all the fruit is washed. Then slice the apples and oranges. Next, add the whole blackberries to the pitcher.

Step 2 | Add Wine, Juices, Bubbly & Ice

Next, add the bottle of red wine, bubbly apple cider, and cranberry juice – then give it a stir.

I recommend chilling for a couple of hours or until ready to serve. Then add ice, stir and enjoy!

If you want to serve immediately just go ahead and add the ice with the liquid, and stir!

Step 2 | Serve & Enjoy

Pre-Poured Glasses: Pour in a glass or plastic cocktail cup and garnish this spooky sangria with extra fruit.

I love to place a fun Halloween straw with black, orange, and white colors in the glass with a plastic spider hanging on the straw and add a skewer of blackberries. You could also place a cinnamon stick inside if you like cinnamon in your sangria. This makes them so pretty and so much fun.

Self-Serve: You can set the pitcher out so everyone can pour their own and make a tray of glasses already prepped.

Or even create a sangria bar by adding a pretty board or bowls of reserved fruit, cinnamon sticks, and some spooky Halloween candy for garnish. This is Sangria Charcuterie!

Tips

  • Don’t forget to allow plenty of time for the beverage to chill before your party (it’s a great prep-ahead Halloween pitcher cocktail)! I like to do it about 3 to 4 hours ahead stick it in the fridge and ice it before serving. Or simply chill the bottles and fruit ahead and mix before serving.
  • If you are serving right away, I suggest muddling the fruit a bit so the flavors are nice and bold.
  • Wait to stir in the bubbly apple cider (Sprite or Ginger Ale ) and ice just before serving. You don’t want the ice to water down the sangria or lose those bubbles.
  • Use any red wine or sangria you love. If it’s your favorite the sangria will be a hit.
  • If the wine isn’t sweet enough for your taste, add a bit of simple syrup to sweeten it up a bit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this a Halloween Mocktail Sangria?

YES! In place of the wine, use an alcohol-removed wine or a full bottle of grape or apple cider. Make it fun for the kids and add gummy worms as a garnish. If you are serving one for the adults and kids just make sure the adult version is out of reach of the little ones. The gummy worms will also help differentiate the two.

How do I muddle fruit?

If you have a muddler press with that to release some of the juices and pressing of the peel will so much flavor. You can use a wooden spoon if you do not have one. This is totally optional but helps speed up the flavors when you don’t have time to let it chill.

What other fruits are good in sangria?

Any fruit is great in sangria really! To keep with the spook factor black plums, black cherries, or black grapes also add a scary touch.

What types of wines are best for sangria?

I prefer to use wine with fruity flavors, like a pinot noir, a red blend, or a sangria blend will work. Garnacha and Rioja come from Spain and are classic choices. Just remember you don’t have to spend a lot of money for it to be delicious.

Variations and Substitutions:

  • Don’t have apple cider – you can substitute a lemon-lime soda (like Sprite) or ginger ale as a replacement.
  • Not crazy about cranberry juice replace it with orange juice or really any fruit juices will work here.
  • Make it spooky – by adding green grapes (peeled are extra scary), lychee fruit, and gummy eyeballs.
  • Want black sangria? Add in a few drops of black food coloring and stir, until the desired color is achieved.
  • Don’t care for red wine – use your favorite white wine!
  • For a less sugar alternative – Use an unsweetened cranberry juice and add a sugar-free sweetener (if desired). You can also use sugar-free maple syrup, honey, or a monk fruit sweetener to add sweetness.
