The Best French Dip Sliders Recipe
Who doesn’t love a French dip sandwich? It’s a classic favorite for a reason—layers of caramelized onions, savory roast beef, and gooey melted cheese come together in every delicious bite.
These French dip sliders take all the best parts of the traditional sandwich and turn them into something perfect for entertaining. Made with soft Hawaiian rolls and baked until golden and melty, they’re ready in just 25 minutes! Whether you’re hosting friends for game day, throwing a family get-together, or just need a low-fuss weeknight supper, these sliders are a go-to. They’re easy to make ahead, too—just assemble them, pop them in the fridge, and bake them right before serving.
I love that they feel a little elevated while still being simple to prepare. Pair them with a crunchy salad or chips for a complete dinner, or set them out with some finger foods when you’re entertaining. And, of course, a French dip isn’t complete without Au Jus! Using a store-bought packet keeps it easy and gives you that rich, savory dipping sauce everyone will love.
How To Make This Easy French Dip Slider Recipe
✱ Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact ingredients and full recipe instructions!
Step 1 | Caramelize the Onions
Preheat oven to 350℉.
To a large skillet set over medium heat, add the butter, onions, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring once in a while till the onions caramelize. If the onions stick to the pan, add a teaspoon of water and keep cooking. Set aside.
Step 2 | Assemble the French Dip Sliders
Cut the buns in half, keeping them all together without pulling each roll apart. Lay one side in an oven safe casserole baking dish and top with the roast beef.
Then add the cheese. Spoon the onions over the cheese and place the other half of the rolls over top, making a big sandwich.
Step 3 | Make the Topping
In the same skillet you made the onions, add 3 tablespoons of butter, French onion soup mix, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir till butter is melted.
Step 4 | Bake
Spoon or brush the melted butter mixture over the top and exposed sides of the buns and sprinkle sesame seeds overtop.
Bake uncovered for about 15 minutes, till the cheese is melty. Sprinkle with parsley after removing from the oven, if desired. Cut the sandwiches on the roll lines and serve hot. Dip in Au Jus, if desired. Serve and enjoy!
Recipe Tips for the Best French Dip Sliders
- Don’t rush the onions! Cooking them slowly over medium heat ensures that they develop that rich, sweet flavor. The caramelized onions are key in building loads of flavor here.
- Keep the rolls intact. Do your best when slicing the Hawaiian rolls in half that they keep intact in one large piece. This makes it so much easier to layer the fillings and get the sliders out of the pan without them falling apart.
- Don’t skip the butter topping! That buttery, savory topping on top adds quintessential French dip flavor and helps the buns get golden and slightly crispy on top.
Variations and Substitutions for Hawaiian Roll French Dip Sandwiches
- Cheese: If you’re not into provolone, feel free to switch it up. You can try swiss or mozzarella, or simply omit the cheese if you prefer.
- Meat Options: Roast beef is classic in French dip sandwiches, but you can use turkey or ham if you prefer! Or, try a combination of them.
- Gluten-Free: To make gluten-free French dip sliders, swap the Hawaiian rolls for gluten-free buns instead.
French Dip Sliders FAQs
I’d recommend provolone or Swiss cheese for these, but they’ll taste delicious with others like Monterey Jack, too. Any creamy, mild cheese that melts nicely would work great here!
Definitely, some shredded mozzarella on top will particularly be great and work just fine!
You can use a teaspoon of garlic salt instead and a bit of dried onions, if desired .
Any size baking dish will work, and you can even bake these on a cookie sheet.

Storage
Storage: Cover the leftover sliders with foil or plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for 3 days.
Freeze: You can also freeze them for up to a month—just wrap each slider in foil before freezing. When ready to eat, thaw and reheat in the oven.
Reheat: To reheat, pop them in the oven at 300°F for about 10 minutes or until warmed through. Alternatively, you can reheat it in the microwave, but the buns will be quite soft.
What to Serve with French Dip Slider Sandwiches
This easy French dip recipe can be served in so many ways! First, definitely serve with an Au Jus sauce for dipping, just like you would a classic French dip.
To make a full meal out of them, serve with some sides like my parmesan roasted potatoes, oven roasted broccoli and a fresh cucumber tomato salad.
If you are serving these French dip sliders as an appetizer, I like to serve them alongside some additional sliders to have a full spread of options. Try serving them with air fryer meatballs, slow cooker little smokies, and buffalo chicken dip!
