Here’s what you will need to whip up a quick batch!

Ingredient Notes

Image of ingredients needed to make Halloween Chex Mix; butter, brown sugar, vanilla, pretzels, rice chex, bugles, M&M's, and Reese's Pieces.

Simple ingredients make up the base of the perfect sweet and salty Halloween party mix. See our Variations section for ideas of additions and substitutions for this recipe.

For the Sauce:

  • Butter: Creamy butter is the base of the caramel sauce. Give a smooth nutty flavor to the caramel sauce.
  • Brown Sugar: Brown sugar caramelizes with butter and gives a sweetness to balance out the salty.
  • Vanilla Extract: Adds a layer of delicious vanilla flavor. It really is just a hint but it’s so good you don’t want to skip it!

For the Chex Mix:

  • Rice Chex Cereal: Any Classic Chex Mix will work. I use rice Chex but use whichever you like. You can get so many flavors and types.
  • Salty Pretzels: I love the pretzels twist because they remind me of bat wings. The mini or regular size will work equally well, but you can use anything you have on hand.
  • Bugles: I usually use the basic, but you can get them in caramel, chocolate peanut butter, and even some savory mixes too.
  • M&M’s Ghoul Mix – This mix has the perfect blend of Halloween colors. You can get them in peanut and regular M&M flavors.
  • Reese’s Pieces: A little peanut butter flavor for the mix.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Pumpkin Spice: Add ½ to 1 tablespoon of pumpkin pie spice to the sauce or use the pumpkin spice Chex mix.
  • Fall Candies: Add a harvest candy mix, candy pumpkins, or candy corn to give even an even more festive look to the mix.
  • Favorite Halloween Candy: For an even spookier Chex Mix add in candy eyes or gummy eyeballs, brains, ghosts, fingers, or worms.
  • More Chocolate: Bite-sized candy bars or Halloween candy will do the trick. You could even add in Pumpkin Pretzels or ones made to look like ghosts.
  • Other Fun Mix-Ins: Gummy worms, mini Oreo cookies, chocolate or white chocolate chips, mini marshmallows, popcorn, or even kettle corn.
  • Baking Morsels: Chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, butterscotch morsels, or caramel bits all are delicious additions.

Tips

  • Chex Party Mix can be made in so many ways for every occasion.  Add your favorite mix-ins to create a unique Chex Mix Recipe with a new twist for your holiday fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a Gluten-Free Halloween Snack Mix

Yes, you can. Many of the Chex cereals are gluten-free, as are many pretzels. Bugles are a corn chip but are not certified GF, so you can replace this in the mix with something else if desired. Most M&Ms and Reese’s Pieces are listed as gluten-free, but just check the labels to be sure. You can always add any GF candies you love and enjoy.

How to Serve Halloween Chex Mix

Perfect for Entertaining: I love to have this on Halloween when family and friends come by for an easy quick grab snack. You can also place it in a cute little Halloween treat bag with a note.

Movie Night: A great way to serve this yummy mix at your next Halloween movie night. Enjoy along with popcorn or even add in popcorn. It’s the perfect snack to nibble on while watching the movie.

Halloween Treats: We get tons of trick-or-treaters on Halloween (they come in from all over our town) and I like to have a little something extra for our neighborhood families. So I will wrap this up in individual servings and give them out. They love it!

How to Store

Storage: After the mix is completely cooled, place in an airtight container and store for up to at least 1 week.
