These Monte Cristo Sliders pack all the best parts of the classic sandwich—crispy golden crust, warm layers of meat and cheese, and a light sprinkle of powdered sugar—into bite-sized, shareable sliders that are perfect for any gathering!

Growing up, some of my favorite memories were the shopping days with my mom that always ended with a stop at Bennigan’s. They had the best Monte Cristo—golden, crispy, and perfectly balanced between sweet and savory. Inspired by those nostalgic bites, I had to put my own spin on it by creating these Monte Cristo sliders. They’re perfect for casual days at home or tailgating while watching football with the family.

Bite-sized food is perfect for feeding a crowd, and our family loves these sliders on game days, whether we’re lounging around the house or tailgating while watching football together. They’re a lifesaver because you can prep them ahead of time and just pop them in the oven for when you’re ready! Serve them with a side of jam or honey mustard for dipping, and watch them disappear!

Nikki’s Recipe Rundown

  • Taste: These sliders offer the absolute perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors!
  • Texture: The crispy, butter top buns offer a lovely contrast to the soft meats and melty cheese in the middle.
  • Ease: If you can make a sandwich and mix an egg mixture, you’ve got this in the bag.
  • Pros: These can easily be used to feed a crowd, they are simple to make, and there will most likely not be any leftovers!
  • Considerations: After removing the foil, you’ll want to keep a close eye on them in the oven to make sure they don’t get too toasty!
  • Recipe Repeatability: Sliders are always a great option to make for gatherings, from holiday celebrations to game day get togethers!

Ingredients Needed to Make Monte Cristo Sliders

Ingredients needed for monte cristo sliders recipe.
  • Hawaiian Rolls: Hawaiian rolls are soft and sweet. I especially like them for sliders since the rolls are stuck together, and you can assemble all of the sliders as once!
  • Jam: I used raspberry jam here, but you can use strawberry, blackberry or even blueberry!
  • Deli Meats: Deli sliced turkey and deli sliced ham is the perfect combination here.
  • Swiss Cheese: Swiss cheese is traditional on Monte Cristo sandwiches, but you can opt for Muenster or Provolone!
  • Butter: Melted butter adds extra flavor to the top of the buns!
  • Egg: Egg is the base of the egg wash that we will brush on top of the sliders.
  • Dijon Mustard: Dijon adds a tangy depth of flavor to the glaze on top.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: For an extra layer of umami flavor!
  • Powdered Sugar: After baking, sprinkle a little powdered sugar on top. It balances out the flavors perfectly!

How To Make Easy Monte Cristo Sliders

Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact ingredients and full recipe instructions!

Step 1 | Prep the Sliders

Preheat the oven to 350. Lightly spray a baking dish with non-stick spray.

Slice the rolls in half, without separating them and place the bottom half in the baking dish. Spread the jam over the bottom half of the rolls.

Then layer the ham and turkey next. Finally, layer the cheese on top of the meat and place the tops of the rolls over the cheese.

Step 2 | Brush With Topping

In a small bowl, mix together the melted butter, egg, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.

Brush this mixture over the tops and sides of the rolls and cover loosely with foil, trying to not to let the foil touch the top of the rolls or it may stick.  If you can’t get the foil to not touch the rolls, you can use toothpicks to help life the foil up higher or spray the foil.

Step 3 | Bake & Serve

Bake for about 15 minutes and then remove the foil and bake another 5-10 minutes until the cheese is melted and tops are golden brown.

Cut sliders apart with a sharp knife and sprinkle with powdered sugar on top. Serve with extra jam, if desired.

Baked Monte Cristo Slider Tips

  • Baking Dish Tip: A 9×13-inch baking dish works well, but expect some extra space around the sides. You can also double the recipe to fill the dish completely.
  • Butter/Egg Sauce: While you don’t need to use all the butter and egg mixture, try to brush some along the sides of the sliders for extra flavor and a golden crust.
  • Jam Inside: If you’re concerned about the rolls getting too soft, you can skip spreading jam inside and serve it on the side instead to prevent fogginess.
  • Deli Meat Prep: Make sure to pat the deli meats dry if they have moisture to avoid soggy rolls.
  • Cheese Options: If Swiss cheese isn’t your favorite, Muenster or provolone make great alternatives, though Swiss is the classic choice for a Monte Cristo.
  • Serve Warm: I recommend serving your Monte Cristo slider sandwiches warm, but definitely give them some time to cool fresh out of the oven before serving! I stick mine in a crock pot casserole dish on warm.

Slider Sandwich Variations and Substitutions

  • While ham and turkey are classic in a Monte Cristo recipe, you can use any of your favorite deli meats!
  • If you are worried about a soggy bottom layer, you can omit the jam in the sliders and serve the jam on the side for dipping instead.
  • Feel free to omit the powdered sugar on top! While I personally love the little bit of sweetness on the top (it’s classic), you can skip it and still have a delicious Monte Cristo slider.

Recipe FAQs

What is a Monte Cristo sandwich made of?

A Monte Cristo sandwich is typically made out of sliced ham, turkey and Swiss cheese! It is usually dipped into an egg batter or custard and then deep fried and topped with powdered sugar. These sliders, however, have an egg wash on top and are baked to golden perfection!

Can I make these sliders ahead of time?

Feel free to prep them a few hours ahead of time, and then just pop them in the oven when you are ready. I wouldn’t prep them too far ahead of time, since the liquid from the jam and the egg wash could potentially make the bread soggy!

What is the best type of bread to use for sliders?

Hawaiian rolls are the most popular choice for their slight sweetness and soft texture. However, any small dinner rolls or slider buns will work.

Storage for Sandwiches

Storage: Cover with foil or plastic wrap or place in an airtight container and store in the refrigerator for 3 days.

Freeze: Allow the sliders to cool before placing them in a freezer-safe container and freezing for up to 3 months. To thaw, place in the fridge overnight and heat in a warm oven until heated through before serving.

What to Serve with Monte Cristo Sliders

These Monte Cristo sliders work perfectly well on their own as an appetizer! If you want to serve them as a whole meal, I recommend serving them with a few side dishes.

Try serving them with a side of parmesan roasted potatoes or loaded baked potato skins! These would also go great with a fresh salad like caesar salad or green pea salad!
